Traditional Gingerbread
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup shortening
- 2/3 cup boiling water
- 1 cup molasses
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Instructions:
Melt the shortening in the boiling water, then add to it the molasses and the egg. Combine the dry ingredients and add that into the molasses mix too. Pour the batter into a greased 9-inch square pan. Bake at 350º F for 30 to 35 minutes, then cool before cutting into squares.
Yield: 9 three-inch squares
